Vision, Mission & Profile

The Upper Denkyira West District by Legislative Instrument 1848 was established in 2008 and is one of the Twenty-Two (22) Administrative Districts in the Central Region. It is located at the northern tip of the region and has boundaries with both Western and Ashanti Region, and with the following Districts:

  • To the North: Bibiani, Anhwiaso – Bekwai District
  • To the East: Amansie West and Amansie Central District
  • To the West: Wassa Amenfi East and Wassa Amenfi West District
  • To the South: Upper Denkyira East Municipality

It has a total land size of 579.21 Square Kilometres with an estimated population of 79,323 (2019 projection) comprising of 50.3% Males and 49.7% Females.

The District is predominantly Agrarian with over 70% of the population into all forms of Agricultural activities. Mining is also one of the main economic activities the people engage in. Little could be said of Manufacturing as the District cannot boast of any manufacturing firm as at now. Regardless, series of attempts are being made to take advantage of the Government’s Flagship Project ‘One District One Factory’ to establish a factory in the District to boost the local economy.

FUNCTIONS

The functions of the Assembly as given in the Local Government Act 1993, Act 462 and the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana are as indicated below:

  • Formulate and execute plans, program and strategies for the effective mobilization of the resources necessary for the overall development of the District
  • Levying and collection of taxes, rates, duties and fees
  • Promote and support productive activity and social development in the District and remove any obstacles to initiative and development
  • Initiate programmes for the development of basic infrastructure
  • Be responsible for the development, improvement and management of environment in the District
  • Collaborate with the relevant national and local security agencies to maintain safety
  • Promote justice by ensuring ready access to courts
